The
first twenty-six years of my medical practice were spent
in solo private practice, while I spent
the
last decade as a Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. I concentrated my ear, nose
and throat work in the area of sinus disorders and allergy. I was
fortunate enough to have over a hundred professional papers published,
as well as having written or edited eight textbooks. For medical
professionals who may be interested in obtaining one of the textbooks, I
suggest searching for "Richard Mabry" at Amazon.com.
Although I was fortunate enough to hold high offices (including the presidency)
of many of our most prestigious specialty societies and to have a number of
awards and recognitions come my way, the most rewarding part of my
professional life was al ways
that moment when someone said, "Doc, I feel better." Whether it was
performing a successful surgery, prescribing the proper medical regimen, or just
providing counsel and advice, the feeling that came from having helped someone
was what kept me going in the profession.
I
am no longer involved in direct
patient care. I've remained active in medical teaching and writing, and
hold the rank of Clinical Professor at three medical schools in Texas.
However, I'm finding that my Christian writing is filling up the time I expected
to gain from my diminished medical activity. It's funny how things seem to
work out that way.
